Bestiary: Ra

The Ra family are a mysterious breed apart.  While not technically a race, the members of the family share such common features and are spread over so much of the Known Worlds that they are often mistake for such.  Innately evil, these are a people not to be triffled with.

Unique Abilities:
Members of the Ra Family are essentially omnipotent, although they cannot change or reverse the actions of the Powers That Be.  The only known weakness a member of the Ra family is said to possess is the inability to look at her or his own reflection in a mirror.  Such an action immediately causes the individual recoil in fear and retreat to a known safe haven.

Ra magic is curiously different from normal magic in the realm.  Whereas most species with the ability to form energy blasts tend to form them in the shape of a sphere, members of the Ra Family form the same blasts in the shape of a pyramid.

Although essentially immortal, Ra Family members suffer from power gluttony and are constantly seeking ancient magical artifacts to enhance their powers.  The younger a Ra is, the more unstable her or his powers are and the more necessary these artifacts become in honing these powers.

When "powering up" before a major spell or battle, it is customary for a Ra to recite an incantation to the Ancient Spirits of Evil.  The incantation reads as follows:

"Ancient spirits of evil...transform this decaying form to (insert name) the ever-living!"

Members of the Ra Family have excellent endurance and can cast up to ten spells in quick succession without even breaking a sweat.  Being immortal, they tend to push themselves to the limit, meaning that after massive combat, they require long periods of rest to regain their strength.  One particularly curious power that members of the Family possess is the ability to regrow limbs that have been severed.

History:
The History of the Ra Family is essentially a history of demonic boredom.  According to myth, they originated on Old Third Earth thousands of years before the founding of Hyrule.  Over the years, as the mortal creatures of the Crystal Realm began to evolve and build culture, the Ra Family's influence began to bleed into the Crystal Realm in short, momentary bursts.  At present, only a handful of Ra settlements are found in this realm.

Little is known about Sara, the founder and sire of the Ra Family.  Many believe that she was one of the first women created by the gods, but that she betrayed them when she felt they had abandoned her.  She lived many lives, her soul bouncing from woman to woman, unable to find rest and unable to accept death.  Through each life, she gained further and further insight in the ways of power until she eventually achieved immortality.

Filled with a bitter rage directed at the gods who created her, Sara sired four sons, passing the power of immortality along to each of them.  Eventually, the five of them discovered how to force their own hatred into other people's souls, and the Ra Family prospered.  Though Sara is the matron of the Ra Family, she rarely becomes involved in their stunts, leaving the majority of the family business to her oldest son Neilra.

In general, members of the Ra Family prefer to send mortal minions to do their dirty work.  The minions of the Family are known for being extremely strong and extremely stupid.  On rare occasions, members of the Family have been known to make alliances with entities of higher brain functions, but these alliances tend to break up very quickly, as the Ra Family likes to maintain the upper hand.

Although in the past the Family has been known for strict solidarity, in recent times several younger members have broken away from the Family, causing great civil strife.

The stunts of the Ra Family have one of two purposes.  Either the individual pulling the stunt is seeking a new source of power, such as an artifact, or the individual is simply bored.  The fact of the matter is that many members of the Ramily like to harass and manipulate mortals simply out of boredom.

Since the Ra Family is so evil, they are more than a threat to the Powers That Be.  Therefore, centuries ago, it was determined that every time a new Ra entered into existence, by one of the three methods of reproduction, the Powers That Be would elevate or create a force of good to balance off this evil.  By this alone, the Powers That Be have managed to check the power of the Family.

Appearance:
Full members of the Ra Family can change their appearance at will, thus making them difficult to identify.  They tend, however, to prefer idealized, attractive forms with darker features.  The one trademark of the Ra Family, which all members share, is the fact that they all have blood red eyes.  When an individual breaks away from the Family (by no means an easy feat and only possible for those who were sired into the Family), their eyes generally change back to the color they were before membership to the Family.

A few idiosyncratic members of the Family prefer looks of terror to looks of beauty.  They will appear as decaying mummies or monsters.  Regardless of physical appearance, if a Ra is forced to look into a mirror, the reflection will be that of their true form, whatever that may be.

Reproduction:
There are three separate methods of reproduction employed by the Ra Family.  It should be noted that no females of the Family are fertile, so typical humanoid reproduction is not an option, although the members of the Family can be very sexually active.

Surrogate Reproduction:

The most common type of reproduction the Ra Family employs is surrogate reproduction.  In this, the Ra male and female implant a fetus into a surrogate mother (usually unwilling) through a magic ritual.  After a rapid one month gestation, the host mother gives birth and dies.  The offspring is a pure Ra and is brought to the Ra homestead to be raised.  There is no nursing involved.

Siring:

When a Ra is seeking a mate, this individual will occasionally come across a mortal deemed worthy.  Like vampires, the Ra Family possesses a process of siring.  The Ra, known as the Sire, will place three cuts on the fact of the intended Ra, the childe.  The Sire will then cut his or her thumb, index, and pinky finger, placing these fingers on the cuts of the childe's face to mingle the blood.  Once this process is complete, the Sire will kill the childe through any method desired.  After twelve hours, the childe will awaken and immediately teleport to the Sire's location.  The process is not complete, however, until the childe murders someone in cold blood.  If this doesn't occur, the childe's powers will be unstable and it is possible that she or he will revert back to mortality.

Crossbreeding:

Ra males are not sterile, so on occasion they will mate with mortal females.  After a gestation period common to the female species, a crossbred half Ra will be born.  Crossbreeds are not innately evil, but most are adopted by their fathers and trained to be evil.  On occasion, the mothers will retain their babies and teach them the ways of good.  A Ra halfbreed will spend life battling an angry temper.  Of note is the fact that a crossbreed's eyes will shift back and forth between red and another color, depending on the mood of the individual.
