Bestiary: Windian

No one is quite certain where the Windians came from and while they share many similarities with their cousin species, the Draconians and the Andorians, the Windians have had a very different history.  As a race, they keep to themselves and have always been known as the most peaceful of people.

Unique Abilities:
Windians are sometimes confused with Draconians, due to their similiar apperances and abilities.  Like their Draconian cousins, Windians possess powerful wings that grant them the ability of flight.  These wings are fixed, however, and cannot be retracted.  The gift of flight is rarely used by the younger generation of Windians, but they can reach heights as high as 50,000 meters.

Like many of the ther magically inclined species of the realm, Windians are endowed with the ability to create bursts of energy which can act as kinetic defense.   These balls of light are used primarily to disarm an opponent.  In general, Windians deplore violence and will never use magic against an enemy who does not possess equal powers.  Extreme circumstances are always the exception.

Unlike their Andorian and Draconian counterparts, the shapeshifting abilities of the Windians is extremely limited.  Most Windians can only maintain a humanoid like appearance.  A few exceptionally talented members of the species, however, can harness enough power to transform into birdlike creatures with the strength to carry well over six hundred pounds and the girth to host five passengers.

A gift the Windian people as a whole excel in is the manufacture of energy weapons that combine craftsmanship with magic.  Windians and Windians alone are capable of transfering energy into the weapons which increase their destructive power by a power of ten.  It is very difficult for a non-Windian to possess such an instrument due to the Windian dislike of war.  The Windians simply refuse to share their technology with outsiders.

History:
Although no one knows their exact origins, most historians agree that Windians appeared in the realm over 80,000 years ago, long before the Risan calendar was established.  The first Windians settled in a fairly large kingdom which grew to become the modern day kingdom of Windia.  As many as thirty dynasties have been recorded as ruling over the kingdom.  The most recent family gained control nearly three hundred years ago and has been uncontested since.

Unlike the Draconians and Andorians, to whom the Windians are closely linked, there has been little to no recorded prejudice against the Windian people and they have been left to their own devices.  The kingdom of Windia is one of the most peaceful in the realm, having, in its long history, only been involved in one war, when the royal family came to the aid of their chief allies in Fanelia.  The people instead devote their time to the arts and to the study of philosophy.  Ironically, Windians are some of the finest weapon makers in the realm, however, they refuse to sell their weapons to outsiders.  Instead, these pieces are used in spars and tournaments.

The Windian people are not xenophobic, however, in general they chose not to leave their kingdom for other places.  They do welcome visitors of any race.  The state religion of Windia is Dragian, but there is a firm separation of religion and politics.  Anyone of any affiliation is allowed to enter the borders of the kingdom, provided they do not set out to intentionally harm others of different faiths.

Currently, the reigning monarch of Windia is Queen Nina.  Several years back, she shocked the world by breaking with tradition and taking a Hylian lover instead of a Windian.  In true Windian fashion, however, the people immediately embraced their leader's decision.

In recent years, there's been a large influx of Windians, arriving from other realms.  Unlike their native brethren, some of these new comers are warriors who seek to regain the honor of their race.  They are a distinct minority and generally are unable to accomplish much.  Perhaps the most famous of such newcomers is a vigilante in Catalan called the Gold Siren.  Her true identity is unknown.

Appearance:
Aside from their permanent white wings, which classify them as demonoids, Windians look remarkably humanoid.  They tend to have muscular limbs, a fact emphasized by Windian fashion.  Windian fashion is unique in that it must accomodate a Windian's wings.  It is unlike anything worn by the other species of the realm.  Windians enjoy wearing bright colors and, being patriotic, wear the royal seal often.

Windians share the same common hair colors as Humans.  Eye colors tend to fall on the yellow-orange-brown color continuum.  A Windian's eyes are unlike most other species in that they have full irises and no whites to speak of.  A Windian's pupils tend to be very small, dialating only in extreme darkness.

As a species, Windians tend to have very fair skin coloring.  A Windian is completely in capable of tanning or growing paler.

Reproduction:
Windians reproduce as most humanoids in the realm, despite their demonoid designation.  The gestation period is roughly six to seven months.  Multiple births are nearly unheard of due, in part, to the fact that a single unborn Windian is born more developed than any other species in the realm.  A mother can gain as many as sixty pounds during pregnancy and more than that is not unprecidented.

Crossbreeding is a difficult matter for Windians, in large part due to their wings.  Windian females, in general, can mate with any species, however, Windian males can only male with other Windians.  A crossbred child will had significantly smaller wings, but will not manifest the characteristics of the non-Windian parent in any other way, as Windian genes are dominant.

Windians are known to be incredibly loyal to their mates, a connection often thought to be linked with the ritual of Oomox of their Andorian cousins.  Windians have incredible fidelity and multiple marriages are practically unheard of, except in ceremonial symbolism.  Premarital sex is generally frowned upon, although with the passage of time, the Windians have grown a bit more tolerant of it.
